Home educators’ evidence airbrushed out of the ASN Inquiry

Once again, home educators and home education support groups were airbrushed out of ‘evidence’ to the Education & Skills Committee’s Additional Support Needs Inquiry, despite so many children becoming home educated due to schools’ failure to ensure their safety or meet their needs.

Despite having researched reasons for parents’ withdrawal of their children from school and finding unmet ASNs to be a key driver, our expertise has once again been sidelined and home educated children and their families who have been failed by the school system have been denied a voice.

Most disappointingly, the children’s commissioner’s representative, with whom we recently shared our findings on parental reasons for withdrawing children, suggested duplication of our work by a third party with only a tangential connection to home education.
